Malaysia’s history of agriculture can be traced back to during British administration in Malaya. Several new commercial crops such as palm oil, cocoa and rubber were introduced. Since then, these crops became the main agricultural exports to global market.
Agriculture and agrobased industry remains an important sector to the country’s economic development, and is thus currently backed strongly by the government to generate wealth and reduce poverty, particularly among those from rural areas.
Today, the sector has grown from the initial palm oil, cocoa and rubber that started the industry over 55 years ago. It also encompasses aquaculture, fishery, livestock and crop production and distribution.
